This dugout canoe was discovered in Honduras. Photo by TuffyDog.com

This canoe was discovered in Honduras. It is made out of a single mahogany log in a manner that replicates a technique used by American Indians over 1,000 years ago.

The canoe is 24 feet long and weighs over 400 pounds. The pattern on the sail was painted by Phyllis Kolianos , Manager of the Weedon Island Preserve Cultural and Natural History Center. It simulates a punctuated design taken from a piece of pottery from the Weeden ( alternative spelling ) Island culture. The design is a bird motif that is probably 1,000 to 1,800 years old.

This canoe was paddled by a crew of four from Cedar Key in Levy County to the Anclote River in Pinellas County.
