FP&L to build new solar power facility in Sarasota
South Florida Business Journal April 14, 2006 by Robin Londner What a dump. That's what Florida Power & Light Co. executives may have said when they first saw Rothenbach Park, site of the closed Bee Ridge Landfill in Sarasota. But the site's dumpy looking days are almost done. FP&L plans to ditch the dump and use Rothenbach for its first solar array. The 250-kilowatt array is to be known as the FPL Solar Array at Rothenbach Park. Brought to you by Cingular As Web readers have learned, the Juno Beach-based electric company said the new solar facility will be the largest solar array in Florida and one of the largest in the Southeast. That's in part because the green power takes up plenty of turf. The 1,200 photovoltaic solar panels are each about 31 inches wide and 63 inches long. The facility is to be more than 28,000 square feet, or about half the size of a football field. Pease is typical of the California homeowners who took the state up on a 1998
offer to subsidize the purchase of residential solar equipment. A well- heeled
retiree strongly motivated by environmental concerns, Pease didn't necessarily
need his solar panels to yield a quick financial payoff.
